Centre for Organics Research
The Centre for Organics Research is a joint initiative between Southern Cross University and NSW Department of Primary Industries which conducts research in partnership with community and industry stakeholders. The Centre for Organics Research provides strong evidence-based scientific and multidisciplinary research focused on clarifying some of the complex issues surrounding organics production and supply chains. This includes research into the comprehensive reach of organic production covering such broad themes as integrated production systems, sustainable resource management, economics and markets, and education and health. |
We are pleased to announce that Prof. Carlo Leifert is leading the initiative and will establish it as an internationally recognised leader in organics research that achieves academic excellence and significant economic, environmental and societal benefit.
The overall vision will be to deliver outcomes to support the productivity and sustainability of the organic food industry in Australia, through the development of existing areas of research and new programs, through new collaborative regional, national and international partnerships.
Prof Leifert brings a wealth of research experience around organic farming and food production systems, and sustainable farming and food security, which will complement the existing research excellence in crop science within Southern Cross Plant Science.

MultiKraft Probiotics Australia
Multikraft Probiotics Australia (MPA) was formed in 2014 as a strategic partnership with Multikraft Austria, who pioneered the use of beneficial microbes (probiotics) in successful commercial applications around 20 years ago. Some relevant applications for our products in the region include the reduction of |
chemical fertilizers in environmentally sensitive areas (such as the Great Barrier Reef) compromising crop yields, but rather improving financial viability; the recycling of waste materials into high quality composts without the need for expensive machinery; and waste/water treatments that provide long-term clean water supply and combat odour and pathogenic bacteria through probiotic inoculation.
The growing challenges posed by drought, climate change and food security have been a catalyst for Multikraft entering the Australian market. Our aim is to provide socially responsible and commercially viable alternatives to harsh chemicals in many areas as diverse as agriculture to household cleaners and cosmetics.

Organic Crop Protectants (OCP)
OCP has been specialising in organic and biological farming in Australia for over 25 years. We remain strongly focused on food production that supports bio-diversity and builds the fertility and stability of our ancient and fragile soils. Our programs start with soil health. Now as member of the DuluxGroup we have the capacity to tap into the Dynamic Lifter basal fertilisers range. Combining this with our range of soil inoculants like RhizoVital FZB42 (Abitep, Germany) and Trichoderma from Metcalf Bio Control in Tasmania, we have soil health and nutrition covered. |
Our ability to provide very accurate soil and cane testing allows our highly trained agronomists to prescribe foliar plant heath nutrition. We can tap into our range of amino acid based trace elements and high N supplements like AminoGro MAXi, Acadian Stimplex, SARSIL Potassium silicate and other products to maximise plant nutrition. Combining this technology with our expert advice and organic pest, weed and disease products leads to maximising potential yields and quality.

Soil CRC
The CRC for High Performance Soils was established in 2017 to give farmers the knowledge and tools they need to make decisions on extremely complex soil management issues. By bridging a gap between soil scientists and farmers, the Soil CRC will ensure that soil performance is increased not just in the short term, but in the long term. |
The Soil CRC has 39 participants that along with the Australian Government contribute $164 million through both cash and in-kind contributions. It is the biggest collaborative soil research effort in Australia’s history. The Cooperative Research Centre coordinates research across a range of disciplines including social science, economics, biology, chemistry, agronomy and soil science. The Soil CRC has funding until 2027.
The practical, real-world outputs will allow farmers to optimise their productivity, yield and profitability, and ensure the long-term sustainability of their farming businesses. Through its soil research and innovation program, the Soil CRC will develop new solutions that will unlock the potential of Australia’s agricultural sector. It will address the billions of dollars in lost opportunity experienced by farmers and regional communities due to infertile and underperforming soils.

Wet Tropics Soilcare (WETS)
Wet Tropics Soilcare (WETS) is a volunteer farming group that helps members improve agricultural production through understanding and caring for our soil and sharing our experiences with others. The group developed out of Terrain NRM’s Digging Deeper soil extension program (2014-15) delivered in partnership with agro-ecologist, David Hardwick, Soil Land Food. We now have around 70 financial members from a wide range of agricultural industries, practices and philosophies across the wet tropical belt of north-eastern Australia. |
We welcome farmers from all agricultural systems and crops with the aim of improving production, profit and our environment. We run farm trials, on-farm workshops and field days and hold one major event each year. In 2016, we were proud to hold the second National Biological Farming Conference in Cairns.
