Dale Abbott Director, Bowen Crop Monitoring Services
Dale runs a successful crop consultancy business, based in Bowen, in the Dry Tropics region between Mackay and Townsville.
The business was established in 1982, and Dale, with his late wife Sally soon developed a thriving and established crop monitoring business. Sally was the first independent horticultural consultant in Queensland, and possibly Australia.
Dale has carried on the business, based on sound IPM principles, and over the last 10 years has implemented change from standard IPM to an overall integrated crop management system. This has involved a heavy emphasis on the introduction and maintenance of beneficial insect species across a broad range of horticultural crops, namely tomatoes, capsicums, cucurbits and fresh market beans.
A key component of this system were Dales’ clients who were prepared to take the risks and pioneer this early work, the culmination of which has been the vision of Jamie and Melita Jurgens. They are one of Dale’s clients and are now running a sustainable farming system which produces quality certified organic produce.
