Alan Coates - Coates Horticulture
Alan is an IPM consultant and educator par excellence. Along with his son Jarrah, he runs Coates Horticulture, a pest and nutrition consultancy largely focused on the macadamia industry.
Alan has educated hundreds of farmers and helped drive the
Macadamia Industry in the IPM direction. His wealth of in-field experience on many types of farms, big and small make his services much sought after.
As a TAFE Agriculture and Horticulture teacher for more than 30 years. Alan is well known by farmers from all industries in the Northern Rivers region of NSW. In addition to Biological Farming, he taught Soils, Integrated Pest Management, Production Horticulture, Macadamia Production, Sub-tropical Fruit Growing and more.
Alan is a lifetime farmer having grown up on a dairy farm.
In recent years he has focused on the macadamia industry as a farmer, consultant and collaborator in research trials for bio-control of insect pests.
Alan recently delivered a powerful and challenging presentation to the Macadamia industry consultants group. His talk was designed to be a wake up call to the industry to not delay in advancing IPM, especially given that environmental, chemical registration and “green” marketing issues are closing in on all those who don’t move to minimum chemical plant protection regimes.
Alan features in the Soil Health Card video below.
